Xuất xứ: là một loài thực vật có hoa sinh sống ở vùng nhiệt đới hoặc cận nhiệt đới.
Tại Việt Nam, phượng vĩ được người Pháp du nhập vào trồng khoảng những năm cuối thế kỷ 19 tại các thành phố lớn như Hải Phòng, Đà Nẵng, Sài Gòn… Hiện nay phượng vĩ là loài cây được trồng rộng rãi từ miền Bắc vào miền Nam trên vỉa hè, công viên, trường học. Thành phố Hải Phòng còn được gọi là thành phố Hoa phượng đỏ; nơi đây hoa phượng được trồng khắp nơi, có cả một công viên hoa phượng ngay trung tâm thành phố, có lễ hội hoa phượng diễn ra vào tháng 5 rất độc đáo.
Đặc điểm của cây phượng vĩ:
Phượng vĩ là loài có thân gỗ lớn, dáng đẹp. Cây thường xanh và có chiều cao trung bình từ 5-12m.
Các hoa của phượng vĩ lớn, với 4 cánh hoa tỏa rộng màu đỏ tươi hay đỏ hơi cam, dài tới 8 cm, còn cánh hoa thứ năm mọc thẳng, cánh hoa này lớn hơn một chút so với 4 cánh kia và lốm đốm màu trắng/vàng hoặc cam/vàng (cũng có khi trắng/đỏ). Phượng vĩ nở hoa từ khoảng tháng 4 đến tháng 6, tùy theo khu vực.
Quả là loại quả đậu có màu nâu sẫm khi chín, dài tới 60 cm và rộng khoảng 5 cm. Tuy nhiên, các hạt riêng rẽ lại nhỏ và cân nặng trung bình chỉ khoảng 0,4g, hạt to cỡ hai ngón tay út, hạt ăn rất bùi và ngon.
Các lá phức có bề ngoài giống như lông chim và có màu lục sáng, nhạt đặc trưng. Nó là loại lá phức lông chim kép. Mỗi lá dài khoảng 30–50 cm và có từ 20 đến 40 cặp lá chét sơ cấp hay lá chét lông chim lớn, và mỗi lá chét lông chim lớn lại được chia tiếp thành 10-20 cặp lá chét thứ cấp hay lá chét con.
Ý nghĩa tên cây phượng vĩ
Tên “phượng vĩ” là chữ ghép Hán Việt – “phượng vỹ” có nghĩa là đuôi của con chim phượng. Đây có thể là một hình thức đặt tên gọi theo cảm xúc vì các lá phượng vĩ nhất là các lá non trông giống như hình vẽ đuôi của loài chim phượng.
Tại Việt Nam, cây hoa phượng là biểu tượng gắn liền với tuổi học trò. Do mùa nở hoa của nó trùng với thời điểm kết thúc năm học, mùa chia tay của nhiều thế hệ học trò. Cây còn gắn liền với nhiều kỷ niệm buồn vui của tuổi học trò, và vì thế người ta gắn cho nó tên gọi “hoa học trò”. Thành phố Hải Phòng là khu vực trồng rất nhiều phượng vĩ. Vì thế thành phố này còn được gọi một cách văn chương là “thành phố Hoa Phượng Đỏ”. Nhà thơ Thanh Tùng có bài thơ Thời hoa đỏ đã được nhạc sĩ Nguyễn Đình Bảng phổ nhạc thành bài hát cùng tên, viết về những kỷ niệm của tuổi trẻ với mùa hoa phượng vĩ.
Cách trồng và chăm sóc
Phượng vĩ cần khí hậu nhiệt đới hay cận nhiệt đới để phát triển tốt. Nhưng cây vẫn có thể chịu được các điều kiện khô hạn và đất mặn.
Cây tái sinh hạt và chồi đều mạnh. Cây có thể phát triển tốt trên mọi loại địa hình: ven biển, đồi núi, trung du. Cây Phượng Vĩ thuộc loại ưa sáng, mọc khoẻ, phát triển nhanh, không kén đất, rất dễ gây trồng. Tuy nhiên, nhược điểm lớn là tuổi thọ không cao: cây trồng trên đường phố chỉ 30 tuổi là đã già cỗi, thân có dấu hiệu mục rỗng, sâu bệnh, nấm bắt đầu tấn công. Còn cây trồng trong công viên, trường học thì có thể có tuổi thọ cao hơn nhưng cũng chỉ đạt 40-50 năm tuổi.
