Cây sưa hay còn được gọi là cây huỳnh đàn, cây trắc thối, cây huê, là loại cây thân gỗ thuộc họ Fabaceae và có tên khoa học là Dalbergia tonkinensis. Cây sưa đỏ thuộc cây gỗ nhóm IA – nhóm gỗ cực kỳ hiếm.
Thân cây sưa đỏ chắc, có tuổi thọ cao, vỏ cây có màu nâu, cao từ 6 – 12m, có khả năng sinh trưởng bình thường. Cây sưa đỏ có tán lá rộng, lá có dạng kép hình lông chim lẻ, và thường mọc đan xen nhau. Mỗi lá kép có từ 9 – 15 lá chét mọc so le trên cuống chính, mặt dưới của phiến lá có màu tái trắng.
Hoa cây sưa đỏ có màu vàng nhạt, thường mọc theo chùm, mọc từ nách lá, cây sẽ ra hoa khi lá đã mọc đầy đủ. Hoa có kích thước từ 6 – 10mm, có mùi thơm nhẹ, thường nở vào khoảng tháng 2 – tháng 3. Quả có dạng hình thuôn dài, mọc theo chùm, dài khoảng 5 – 8cm. Rễ cây thường ăn sâu xuống lòng đất nên còn được sử dụng như một loại cây giống bảo vệ môi trường khỏi lũ lụt, thiên nhiên,…
Gỗ cây sưa đỏ có màu bã trầu, vân gỗ nổi lên từng lớp, có thớ gỗ mịn nên có giá trị kinh tế cao khi sử dụng làm đồ nội thất trong nhà. Ngoài ra, thớ gỗ sưa đỏ sẽ có mùi hương trầm khi bạn ngửi gần hoặc đốt nó lên. Chính vì thế, cây gỗ sưa đỏ được xếp vào hàng gỗ quý cần được bảo tồn.

Cây giống sau khi được mua về thì tiến hành loại bỏ lớp bầu ni lông bao phía ngoài của cây giống và cho vào hố đã đào sẵn. Lưu ý khi trồng không cần bỏ lớp đất bám ở rễ cây vì như thế sẽ khiến cho rễ cây bị ảnh hưởng, làm giảm quá trình phát triển của cây.
Cây sau khi được đặt vào hố thì vun đất và cố định xung quanh cây để cây có thể đứng vững, không bị đổ nếu điều kiện thời tiết khắc nghiệt.
