Cây Sao Đen có tên gọi khác: Cây Sao, Mạy Khèn ( Lào), Sao Cát, Sao Bã Mía, Sao Nghệ, Mạy Khen Hua. Tên khoa học của nó là Hopea odorata Roxb, thuộc chi Sao họ Dầu. Cây có nguồn gốc từ Ấn Độ được du nhập và sử dụng ở nhiều nước nhiệt đới. Tại Việt Nam có thể dễ dàng nhìn thấy loài cây này ở các thành phố. Tại Hà Nội cây cũng được trồng tại phố Lò Đúc từ thế kỷ XX.
Đặc điểm hình thái
Sao Đen là cây gỗ lớn, thân thuôn dài, cao khoảng 20-25m và có thể cao tối đa 30m, đường kính 60-80cm. Tán nhỏ hình chóp, tỉa cành tự nhiên. Một điểm rất dễ để phân biệt Sao Đen với các giống cây khác là vỏ cây có màu đen, có những vết nứt sọc theo thớ, thịt gỗ bên trong có màu hơi đỏ. Cành non và cuống lá có phủ lông. Lá Sao Đen hình trái xoan, thuôn dài và nhọn ở đỉnh. Mặt trên của lá màu xanh bóng, mặt dưới mịn, gân chính nổi rõ, gân phụ mọc đối nhau.
Hoa cây Sao Đen màu trắng nở vào tháng 2-3, chúng mọc thành cụm, mỗi cụm hoa gồm có 11 – 12 nhánh. Mỗi nhánh lại có từ 4-6 hoa nhỏ như hình ngôi sao. Quả Sao Đen có 2 cánh dài có lông mịn, lúc non có màu xanh nhạt, khi già chuyển sang màu nâu. Mỗi cánh dài 5-6cm. Tuy quả ra với số lượng lớn nhưng 2 năm mới ra 1 lần. Sao Đen thường ra hoa vào tháng 2-3 và ra quả vào tháng 4-7.
Đặc điểm sinh trưởng
Cây có tốc độ sinh trưởng nhanh (tăng trưởng đường kính trung bình năm là 1.1–14 cm/năm). Thích hợp trồng ở những vùng có khí hậu nhiệt đới ẩm đặc biệt có 2 mùa rõ rệt. Cây có sức sống khỏe nên có thể chịu được nắng nóng và khô hạn. Nếu trồng cây Sao Đen ở vùng đất lạnh thì nó sẽ phát triển bình thường về chiều cao và đường kính nhưng ra hoa và đậu quả lại ít hơn.
Đất thích hợp nhất là đất phù sa cổ, sét pha cát ở Đông Nam Bộ. Nó cũng phát triển khá tốt trong vùng đất đỏ bazan với độ PH=4,5-5.0. Cây ưa đất ẩm, chịu bóng khi còn non và từ năm 3 tuổi lại chuyển sang cây ưa sáng. Tái sinh tự nhiên tốt ở các khu rừng có độ tàn che nhẹ.

Được sử dụng để dựng nhà, đóng đồ đạc gia đình, làm sàn nhà, tà vẹt,… Đặc biệt là gia công cả đồ thủ công mỹ nghệ, đóng tàu thuyền và các phương tiện di chuyển trên sông nước. Vỏ cây có vị chát, có nhiều tatin sử dụng để chữa bệnh hiệu quả: chữa viêm lợi, sâu răng. Thuốc được điều chế từ vỏ cây Sao Đen có khả năng làm cho lợi răng chắc và giảm khả năng bị rụng răng. Nhiều nơi người ta còn sử dụng vỏ của nó để ăn với trầu cau. Hoặc cũng có thể dùng vỏ khô của cây để ngâm rượu hoặc sắc với nước để ngậm. Hiện nay, cây Sao Đen là cây công trình dễ tìm thấy ở các thành phố của Việt Nam vì tốc độ sinh bóng mát nhanh, cho bóng tốt và có nhiều lợi ích kinh tế, chữa bệnh.
Cách chăm sóc cây Sao Đen
Cây cũng không yêu cầu phải chăm sóc quá tỉ mỉ. Thời gian đầu cần lưu ý nước tưới và bổ sung dinh dưỡng thường xuyên cho cây. Sau đó thì tiến hành làm cỏ và vun xới gốc mỗi năm từ 2 – 3 lần trong 3 năm đầu . Bạn có thể phát quang dọn cỏ và vun gốc vào thời điểm đầu và cuối mùa mưa. Khi cây được 8-10 năm tuổi thì nên tỉa thưa để mở tán cho cây.
